What Shall We Inaugurate?

Not only is January 20th Trump’s inauguration day, it is also Martin Luther King Day in the US. It is hard to imagine a sharper contrast between two public figures. One famously dreamt of the day when all children would “live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character.” And the other…????

If,  like me, you have been avoiding the news today (and possibly for months), you don’t need any more reminders about the murky four years that are being inaugurated today.

Synonyms for the word inaugurate are to: begin, commence, initiate, start, and usher in.

I am still struggling with what I want to begin, or usher in, during these changed times. It was helpful to tune in this morning to a livestream panel discussing “The Way We Get Through This is Together”, organized by historian, author and activist Rebecca Solnit.

Some of suggestions from the panelists on how to move forward were:

  • Take time to be silly – having fun confounds the fear-mongers!
  • Plant a seed, knowing every seed you plant is a prayer
  • Be extra kind to each other.
  • Throw a party. More confounding fun – and it also builds connection and community.

Akaya Windwood  wondered if we could cuddle each other through the next four years. That sounds pretty good to me!

I’m still not exactly sure what my way forward looks like, but my wish is that it is both like the song “There Ain’t Nothing Gonna Steal My Joy”, and the young girl dancing to her choir’s rendition of it.

May you find your joy today!
